Welcome to year 1

The children will  be working towards Year One outcomes through our enabling provision. This will provide opportunities to develop resilience, independence, creative and critical thinking skills.

Year 1

                                                                                                             September 2019

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! We hope that you had a great holiday and are well rested for the new school year. We are very excited to get to know the Year One children.

You may have noticed the interactive and engaging layout of the classrooms. The Year One curriculum is designed to be fully integrated and provide a rich, simulating learning experience which incorporates the child centred practice of the Early Years Foundation stage. The children will be still be working toward Year One outcomes but the new curriculum will provide opportunities for children to work together and with the adults within the class.

Our Topic this term is ‘Beegu’ which is based around our class text and ‘Home is where the heart is’.  In English we will be developing reading and writing skills, supporting children to spell words using their knowledge of letter sounds, and introducing the children to a wide range of texts. There will be lots of speaking and listening opportunities to help develop vocabulary and grammar. The children will have daily reading activities and read to us during guided reading sessions. We will also do daily phonics lessons. We will be focusing on developing fine motor skills as this will support their handwriting. We would appreciate your support with handwriting practice.

In Maths, learning will be developed through the use of equipment and picture representations as well as numbers. We appreciate your support in practising counting to 100, pairs of numbers that add to 10 and 20 (eg 5 and 5 make 10) as well as exploring real life examples of maths at home such as money and time.

The children’s home reading books will be changed once a week during the children’s guided reading sessions. Please support their progress in reading by listening to them at home every night and asking questions about what they have read. You might ask about what happened, what they think will happen next, and how characters are feeling/behaving. Each child has a Reading Record for you or the children to make comments.

PE this year will take place on Tuesday mornings. Children need to bring in a school P.E. kit consisting of a white t-shirt, green shorts and trainers. The P.E. kit can be brought into school at the beginning of the term, and left on the child’s peg. It would help if children wore clothes that made changing easier e.g. shoes without laces and polo shirts instead of full buttoned shirts. Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly named.  Also, no jewellery, apart from ear studs, should be worn.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that school is open from 8:50am and lessons start at 9:05. Thank you for your support in ensuring school uniform is worn consistently. Jewellery, with the exception of stud earrings, is not allowed for safety reasons. As a Healthy School, packed lunches should promote healthy eating habits and not include sweets, chocolate bars or fizzy drinks. All children at Beckford now celebrate their birthday at school with a song and a sticker.  Please note that we do not accept cakes, party bags or any sort of ‘treats’ for the class.

Thank you for your continued support. We will be hosting a Parents’ Event on Wednesday 18th September at 3.45pm.  This will be a chance for you to see the new classroom and meet the teaching team, as well as ask any questions you have and find out about our exciting new home learning project, Maths With Parents.

We look forward to seeing you then,
